Powell joined the Concur Endurance group as its first Chief Commercial Officer in September 2018 from the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer (MLS) where he served as their Chief Commercial Officer for over 12 years. He oversaw all of the clubs key revenue-generating areas of the business, including sponsorship, tickets sales and premium seating and played a key role in the opening of the teams new downtown stadium in 2012, including serving as the local negotiator for the naming rights partnership with BBVA Compass. Powell’s sponsorship team was awarded the MLS Sponsorship Team of the Year award in 2009 and Powell himself was was honored as the MLS Sponsorship Executive of the Year in 2012. During his spell in Houston, he secured several of the clubs largest multi-year partnerships with national and global brands including Pepsi, Heineken, Audi, 76, Verizon, BHP Billiton, Sprint, Memorial Hermann Hospital, Visa, Budweiser and the 2018 signing of MD Anderson as the teams official jersey partner. The MD Anderson multi-year partnership created a ground breaking jersey partnership between the Dynamo and the most innovative cancer center in the world, to raise funds and awareness, educate consumers on preventative measures and encourage the adoption of a healthy life style.
Prior to entering professional sports, Powell enjoyed a successful career in broadcasting as an on-air personality and general manager, including serving as the youngest general manager of a large market radio station in Arizona.
Powell’s extensive career in sports began in 1992 with Wichita Wings of the Major Indoor Soccer League and the National Professional Soccer League. Powell was later named General Manager of the Tampa Bay Terror before joining the Tampa Bay Mutiny of MLS.
During Powell’s time as VP of Sales in Tampa, his department was nominated for Sales Team of the Year in 1998 after leading the league in new season ticket sales. Powell also created and launched the now famous “Kicks for Kids” program, and he was nominated for Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal’s “Best Forty under Forty” honor.
After serving a two-year stint as Chief Operating Officer and VP of Marketing of the World Indoor Soccer League, Powell joined Hibernian Football Club of the Scottish Premier League and served as commercial director for two years. Powell returned to MLS in 2003 to lead the sales charge of the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) owned San Jose Earthquakes and followed this success with a spell with the New York New Jersey MetroStars before joining the Dynamo in 2006.
Powell holds both US and UK citizenship and lives in La Crescenta with wife April (Marathon runner) and sons Thomas and Brendan.
